The Gemmell Residence makes a contemporary statement amidst single-family homes in Northeast Portland. The building has side-by-side condos with a shared two-story open space topped with a translucent skylight. A fireplace in each home brings a warm, grounding focus to the living space. Making the most of natural light, frosted glass encloses the bedrooms, and an open aluminum grating delineates the circulation decks. The side exterior walls are in-filled with translucent wall panels. The exterior is clad in a smooth stucco finish; accents of phenolic paneling and glazing deconstruct the typical symmetry of traditional duplex architecture.
