SUM Design Studio + architecture is seeking a Project Manager to join our growing team. This role is suited for an experienced architect who enjoys leading projects from early planning through construction while maintaining a hands-on role in design, documentation, and technical problem solving.
The ideal candidate brings a thoughtful design sensibility, strong technical knowledge, and the organizational skills to guide projects, coordinate consultants, and maintain meaningful relationships with clients.
Candidates should have 8+ years of experience within an architecture or design firm and hold a 4-year professional degree in architecture or a related field.
The Role
As a Project Manager, you will help lead projects through all phases of the architectural process, working closely with principals, consultants, and internal team members. This role combines project leadership with hands-on architectural production.
Responsibilities include
· Lead projects through all phases including master planning, entitlement, design development, permitting, construction documentation, and construction administration
· Develop design concepts and translate them into clear, coordinated, and code-compliant construction drawings
· Manage project schedules, budgets, and staffing while ensuring projects are delivered on time and within scope
· Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, building trusted relationships and guiding projects from concept through completion
· Coordinate and manage consultant teams including structural, civil, mechanical, and specialty consultants
· Oversee the preparation and coordination of complete construction document sets
· Review drawings for quality control, coordination, and adherence to firm standards
· Lead internal project teams, providing direction, mentorship, and technical guidance
· Participate in construction administration, including site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and coordinating with contractors
· Assist with project proposals, fee development, and scope definition when needed
Qualifications
· Demonstrated experience with all phases of architectural practice, from early planning through construction
· Strong understanding of building codes, zoning, life safety, jurisdictional processes, and permitting
· In-depth knowledge of building systems, materials, specifications, and construction techniques
· Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while producing high-quality work
· Experience coordinating and leading project teams, including internal staff and consultants
· Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
· Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to adapt to evolving project requirements
· Proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and project management tools such as Smartsheet and Procore
Preferred Qualifications
· Licensed Architect in the State of Oregon, or actively pursuing licensure
· Experience with Hospitality, Financial, Healthcare, and Residential projects
· Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite or similar visual tools
