The Commons Brewery

Reclaiming a former furniture and flooring warehouse in Portland’s emerging Brewery Belt, SUM designed a new home for The Commons Brewery, tripling the size of its previous space while preserving the character of the original structure.

Inside the expansive barrel-vaulted shell, a distinctive brick and plywood volume, —known as the “Brewer’s Box,” houses the tasting room, demonstration brewhouse, and support areas. Original windows and 30-foot ceilings bring in natural light, while the adaptive reuse approach grounds the project in both craft and place.

The result is a bold yet approachable brewery space that celebrates Portland’s brewing culture and at the time The Commons’ growing community.
