Sauvie Island Academy
Portland, Oregon
SUM designed a new 3,128-square-foot annex for Sauvie Island School that expands learning opportunities while honoring the school’s character.
The Joyce Miller Owens Annex includes flexible classrooms and a science lab, designed with natural daylight, efficient circulation, and durable donated materials. Wood framing and carefully detailed siding align with the existing architecture while providing modern performance. Large windows connect students to the outdoors, supporting focus and well-being.
Balancing budget, function, and context, the project delivers an inspiring space that reflects the school’s commitment to curiosity, connection, and academic growth in a community-centered environment.
